Project brief

This project documents a digital manufacturing workflow for a stepped shaft in Boxford V10 CAD/CAM using an MT2i lathe configuration. The process starts with a cylindrical billet defined by its outside diameter and working length, then constructs a turning profile through coordinate entry. The profile includes stepped diameters, grooves, tapered transitions, rounded shoulders and chamfers. Dimensioned two-dimensional geometry provides the basis for checking the revolved form, while shaded model views show the resulting shape from several directions. A configured tool library supports the intended turning operations, and the report records G-code generation and virtual machining views that distinguish remaining stock from the finished component. The work also connects the digital model to a proposed inspection plan, selecting suitable methods for diameters, lengths, shoulder positions and runout. Physical cutting was not carried out, so the dimensional targets and simulation status are kept separate from actual measured results. The deliverable demonstrates preparation for CNC manufacture: stock definition, profile control, model verification, tool selection, program generation and an inspection strategy that could be applied after a future machining run.

Engineering approach

  1. Selected the lathe configuration and defined cylindrical stock.
  2. Constructed and dimensioned the shaft profile using coordinate entry and transition features.
  3. Checked the revolved geometry using shaded three-dimensional views.
  4. Configured the tool library, generated the part program and reviewed virtual stock removal.
  5. Mapped key dimensions to proposed caliper, micrometer and profile-inspection checks.
